Ailing Nadal pulls out of Wimbledon

20/06/09

World No. 1 Rafael Nadal announced Friday that he won’t defend his Wimbledon title because of tendonitis in his knees.

Nadal is the first reigning Wimbledon men’s champion not to defend the title since Goran Ivanisevic in 2002 and only the second in the last 35 years.

Wimbledon begins Monday.

"I’m just not 100 per cent," Nadal said in a news conference at London’s All England Club. "I’m better than I was a couple of weeks ago but I just don’t feel ready."

If he had elected to play, the Spaniard would have faced a difficult road back to the final. Friday’s draw put Nadal on course for a likely second-round match up with former No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt, with No. 3-seeded British contender Andy Murray potentially waiting in the semi-finals.

Nadal lost an exhibition match to Hewitt on grass on Thursday, and lost another two-setter against Stanislas Wawrinka on Friday before making his decision.

Nadal pulled out of the prestigious Queen’s tournament, which Murray won for his first grass-court title, to rest his knees after a stunning fourth-round loss to Robin Soderling at the French Open. It was Nadal’s first defeat at Roland Garros.

"I think I reached the limit right now. I need to reset to come back stronger," Nadal said.

Federer is now the No. 1 favourite

Nadal’s withdrawal returns world No. 2 Roger Federer to his familiar role as the Wimbledon favourite. Federer, whose run of five straight titles at the All England Club ended with an epic five-set final loss to Nadal last year, is bidding for a record 15th Grand Slam singles title after completing the career Slam by winning the French Open earlier this month.

Canada has a seeded player in the women’s draw, No. 23 Aleksandra Wozniak. The native of Blainville, Que., will take on Italian Francesca Schiavone, a veteran of eight Wimbledons who is ranked 50th in the world.

Wozniak, appearing in her third Wimbledon, looks to improve on her second-round exit in 2008.

Stephanie Dubois of Laval, Que., returns to Wimbledon for the second year in a row and will meet Italian Sara Errani.

World No. 1 Rafael Nadal announced Friday that he won’t defend his Wimbledon title because of tendonitis in his knees.

The lone Canadian man in the singles draw is Frank Dancevic. The Niagara Falls, Ont., native will play Belgian Steve Darcis, who’s ranked 72nd in the world. It’s the fourth Wimbledon appearance for the 126th-ranked Dancevic, who reached the second round in each of the last two years.

Canada’s best hope for a Wimbledon championship lies in Toronto’s Daniel Nestor, who will defend his men’s doubles title along with Serbian team-mate Nenad Zimonjic. Nestor and Zimonjic are seeded No. 2, behind American twins Bob and Mike Bryan.

On the women’s side, the Williams sisters could potentially meet in the finals after being placed in opposite halves. Defending champion Venus Williams, seeded No. 3, may have to get past top-ranked Dinara Safina in the semis, while No. 2 Serena Williams could face No. 4 Elena Dementieva.

The 2004 champion, Maria Sharapova, seeded 24th as she tries to return to form after a lengthy injury layoff, starts against Viktoriya Kutuzova of Ukraine and could face Serena Williams if she makes it to the quarter-finals.
